Club Options LHP Alec Gamboa to Triple-A Worcester
BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today reinstated left-handed pitcher Ranger Suarez from the 15-Day Injured List. To make room, Boston optioned left-handed pitcher Alec Gamboa to Triple-A Worcester following yesterday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Suarez will start today’s game against Toronto.
Suarez, 30, was placed on the Injured List on July 9 (retroactive to July 6) with a left groin strain. The left-hander has posted a 3.15 ERA (32 ER/91.1 IP) with a 1.16 WHIP, .232 opponent batting average (80-for-345), and 97 strikeouts in 17 starts this season for Boston. He was selected to represent the American League at the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, his second career selection, also having been named a National League All-Star in 2024 with the Philadelphia Phillies. Originally signed by Philadelphia as an international free agent in April 2012, the Venezuela native has gone 57-40 with a 3.35 ERA (318 ER/853.1 IP) and 802 strikeouts in 204 career Major League games (136 starts) with the Phillies (2018-25) and Red Sox (2026).
Gamboa, 29, allowed one run over 4.0 innings in yesterday’s game against the Blue Jays. The left-hander has made seven appearances for Boston this season, his Major League debut, posting a 2.08 ERA (3 ER/13.0 IP) with 12 strikeouts. He has also pitched in 15 games (six starts) for Triple-A Worcester this year, recording a 3.63 ERA (18 ER/44.2 IP) with 43 strikeouts. Originally selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the ninth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the California native owns a 4.16 ERA (187 ER/404.1 IP) in 146 career minor league games (47 starts).
