Ontario iGaming Grows as Q1 Delivers Increases Across the Board

There were 50 operators with 80 active gaming websites in Q1 2024-25 and almost 1.9 million active accounts

iGaming Ontario has published its latest performance report, outlining the local online gaming industry’s performance in the first quarter of the 2024-25 fiscal year (FY). The Q1 report covers the period from April 1 to June 30 and contains information about the collective performance of all legal iGaming operators.

Official data shows that iGaming handle for the period skyrocketed to CAD 18.4 billion ($13.3 billion), up 31% from CAD 14 billion in Q1 2023-24. This figure also marks an increase from the CAD 17.8 billion in Q4 2023-24.

In the meantime, gaming revenue increased to CAD 726 million ($524.8 million), marking a significant 34% increase from CAD 540 million in Q1 2023-24. The figure also represents a quarter-on-quarter increase of 5.2% from CAD 690 million in Q4.

The increase in revenue and handle was primarily driven by a major increase in iGaming activity. The online casino segment was singlehandedly responsible for CAD 15.5 billion ($11.2 billion) of the total CAD 18.4 billion wagered.

Conversely, betting handle experienced a slight quarter-on-quarter decline to CAD 2.5 billion ($1.8 bilion). This figure, however, still marks a year-on-year increase from CAD 2 billion in FY 2023-24. P2P poker experienced a similar situation, marking a year-on-year growth and a quarter-on-quarter decline to CAD 402 million ($290.6 million).

The same trends were reflected in iGaming Ontario’s revenue chart, showing that online casino gaming revenue stood at CAD 529 million ($382.3 million), up from previous periods. Sports wagering also reported a higher revenue figure (CAD 181 million/$130.8 million) in spite of the quarter-on-quarter decrease in handle.  Poker revenue reached CAD 16 million ($11.6 million), down from Q4 2023-24 but up from Q1 2023-24.

iGaming Ontario posted additional highlights, remarking that there were 50 operators with 80 active gaming websites in Q1 2024-25.

At the same time, there were almost 1.9 million active player accounts, although this figure does not necessarily reflect the actual number of players since some have multiple accounts.  Speaking of customers, the average player spent CAD 284 ($205.3) a month, iGaming Ontario said.

Martha Otton, iGaming Ontario’s executive director, commented on the results, saying that many Canadians are finding enjoyable options in the open regulated iGaming market.

“The revenue generated by Ontario’s competitive iGaming market contributes directly to provincial priorities such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education.” Martha Otton, executive director, iGaming Ontario

The iGaming organization added that the figures in its report are unaudited and subject to adjustment.
