HORVATā€™S HOT STREAK
Tallying eight goals in his last five games (Oct. 28-Nov.8), Bo Horvat ties Mikael Samuelsson (2009.10, March) and Alexandre Burrows (2009.10, January) for the most goals over a five-game span and are the only Canucks to achieve this record in the last 26 years. Horvat is also the first player in franchise history to have five multi-goal games in the first 13 games of the season. He now ranks second in goals in the NHL this season at 12, only two behind Connor McDavid (14) for first place.

ā€¢ With 24 goals in 29 games since March 9, 2022, Horvat has the highest goals per game (0.83) in the League during that stretch (minimum 5 GP).

ā€¢ Scoring his fifth power play goal in his last three games on Nov. 3 vs ANA, Horvat tied Ryan Kesler and Henrik Sedin for 10th most power play goals in franchise history (61), accomplishing the feat in 64 fewer games than Kesler (583 GP vs 647 GP) and 588 fewer games than Henrik (1,171 GP). He also potted his 10th career shorthanded goal (EN), tying Kesler for seventh-most in club history.

HORVAT HITS 200

The winger became the fourth Canucks player in the past 20 years to record three goals in a single frame joining Horvat (Oct. 22/19), Mikael Samuelsson (Mar. 9/10) and Markus Naslund (Oct. 21/02).

FIVE-POINT PETEY

TEAM NOTES
CROSBY VS. OVECHKIN
The 2021-22 season marks the 18th season that generational talents Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin face off. The two have taken part in 62 head-to-head matchups, where Crosby and the Penguins have gone 36-23-3 against Ovechkin and the Capitals. Below are their stats when facing each other in the regular season:

Player GP G A PTS
Sidney Crosby 62 28 56 84

D.C. DOMINATOR
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has consistently produced points
throughout his career against the Capitals. Despite not playing in the
same division as Washington until 2013-14, Crosby ranks first in points

Eric, Jordan and Marc have all faced off in the same game 10 previous times in their NHL careers (2013-16 w/ Carolina and NYR), but Wednesday would mark their first such matchup since 3/31/16 and just their second such matchup to feature Jordan playing against Eric and Marc, as the Hurricanes and Rangers faced off once at the end of the 2015-16 season after Eric was traded to NYR. The three brothers enter Wednesdayā€™s contest with a combined 3,435 NHL games played over the last 19 seasons (2003-present), and they became the first trio of brothers to each log at least 1,000 career NHL games when Marc skated in his 1,000th game with DET last season (3/12/22). In their 10 previous meetings, Jordan has recorded six points (3g, 3a).

TAKING ADVANTAGE
Stefan Noesen converted on the Hurricanesā€™ opening power-play opportunity vs. TOR (11/6). Carolina has scored on the man-advantage in four consecutive games (10/31-11/6: 4 PPG), with power-play goals from Noesen (2), Sebastian Aho and Martin Necas over that stretch. This marks the Hurricanesā€™ longest streak of games with a power-play goal since 2020-21 (2/27-3/11: 12 PPG in 7 GP), as Carolina scored on the man-advantage in three consecutive games five times last season.

Longest streak of games with a power-play goal, last five seasons (2018-present):
7 ā€“ 2/27/21-3/11/21 (12 PPG)
5 ā€“ 2/11/21-2/19/21 (7 PPG)
4 ā€“ 10/31/22-11/6/22 (4 PPG)
11/5/18-11/12/18 (5 PPG)
3/30/19-4/4/19 (5 PPG)
10/3/19-10/8/19 (5 PPG)
10/26/19-11/2/19 (5 PPG)

A NOESEN IN THE SUN
Stefan Noesen scored Carolinaā€™s only goal against the Maple Leafs on Sunday, and he has now tallied six points (2g, 4a) in 2022-23, with both of his goals coming on the power play. His two goals on the man-advantage mark a new NHL single-season high, as he had scored just one power-play goal in his NHL career (3/5/20 vs. MIN, while with SJS). Noesen trails only Andrei Svechnikov (3) in that category this season after scoring an AHL career-high 13 goals on the man-advantage in 2021-22.

HEAT CZECH
Martin Necas was held without a point vs. TOR on Sunday, ending his career-long, six-game point streak (10/24-11/4: 4g, 6a) and marking just the second time in 12 games this season that he was kept off the scoresheet (also 10/22 at CGY). He paces the Hurricanes in assists (10) and points (17) in 2022-23, and his 17 points are tied for the fourth-most by any player in franchise history through the opening 12 games of any season (Eric Staal, 2005-06: 11-14ā€”25; Rod Brindā€™Amour, 2007-08: 6-12ā€”18; Sebastian Aho: 2018-19: 4- 13ā€”17). Necas has earned nine points over his last six games (10/28-11/6: 4g, 5a) and leads the team in goals, assists and points over that span.

ETCH-A-SVECH
Andrei Svechnikov recorded an assist on Stefan Noesenā€™s power-play goal vs. TOR (11/6), extending his point streak to four games (10/31-11/6: 1g, 4a). He has now posted an assist in three consecutive games (11/3-11/6: 4a), tied with Brady Skjei (10/24-10/29: 3a) for the longest such streak by any Hurricanes player in 2022-23. Svechnikov ranks third on the team with 14 points (8g, 6a) this season, including a team-high seven points (3g, 4a) on the man-advantage.

NEED AN ASSIST?
Brent Burns tallied a power-play assist vs. TOR (11/6) and leads the Hurricanes with six assists on the man-advantage in 2022-23. He now ranks tied for second among all NHL defensemen in power-play assists (Cale Makar, COL: 7a) and tied for third in power-play points (Makar: 0-7ā€”7; Rasmus Dahlin, BUF: 3-4ā€”7) this season. Burns posted a five-game point streak from 10/24-11/3 (2g, 3a) and has now earned all nine of his points this season in his last 10 games (10/17-11/6: 2g, 7a), finding the scoresheet in eight games over that span.

DRURY DUTY
Jack Drury was recalled from Chicago (AHL) on Monday and could make his Hurricanes season debut against the Panthers. He played the first two NHL games of his career last season and scored a goal in both, becoming just the fifth player in franchise history to accomplish the feat. Drury has tallied three points (1g, 2a) in eight AHL games in 2022-23 after posting 52 points (20g, 32a) in 68 regular-season games with the Wolves last season. He also registered 24 points (9g, 15a) in 19 AHL playoff games to help the Wolves win the Calder Cup, earning a point in 16 of those contests and finishing tied for second in goals and tied for third in points among all AHL skaters during the postseason.

RODDY POSITIVITY
Sundayā€™s game marked Rod Brindā€™Amourā€™s 300th game as the Hurricanesā€™ head coach. He joined Jack Evans (1983-88: 374 GC), Paul Maurice (1995-03, 2008-11: 920 GC), Peter Laviolette (2003-08: 323 GC) and Bill Peters (2014-18: 328 GC) as the fifth coach in franchise history to reach the milestone and has posted 25 more wins than any of the other four managed through their first 300 games behind the bench (Laviolette: 157-111-6-26). * While the Golden Knights and Kraken each extended their win streaks to keep pace atop the Pacific Division, the Devils also captured another two points to continue their recent string of success.

* The latest instalment of the ā€œBattle of New Yorkā€ featured a fifth consecutive road win for the Islanders, highlighted by Anders Lee capping a multi-goal, third-period rally.

* Wednesday features two Navy Federal Credit Union Veterans Appreciation Night games as part of a second straight NHL on TNT doubleheader.

TRIO OF CLUBS EXTEND STRINGS OF SUCCESS AFTER MISSING 2022 PLAYOFFS

The Golden Knights (12-2-0, 24 points), Devils (10-3-0, 20 points) and Kraken (8-4-2, 18 points) extended the three longest active winning streaks in the NHL as they continued strong starts after missing the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

* Vegas extended their winning streak to eight games ā€“ the longest in the NHL this season ā€“ by posting their League-best fourth third-period comeback win of the campaign. Reilly Smith, who cued the rally with his 10th shorthanded goal in a Golden Knights uniform, became the first player in NHL history to score both the tying goal and overtime winner while playing in his 700th career game.

* New Jersey missed the 2022 postseason by 37 points but currently sit two points out of first place in the Eastern Conference after pushing their winning streak to seven contests, tied with Boston for the second-longest in the League this season. The Devils matched the fewest games in franchise history to reach the 10-win mark in a single campaign after first achieving the feat in 1993-94 (13 GP) en route to a 47-win campaign, a second-place finish in the NHLā€™s overall standings and a Conference Finals appearance.

Andre Burakovsky (1-2ā€”3) factored on three of the Krakenā€™s four first-period goals and Morgan Geekie (0-1ā€”1) factored on the game-winning goal for the third straight game as Seattle captured its fifth straight victory dating to Oct. 29 ā€“ outscoring the opposition 20-8 in those contests. The Kraken have led for 139:33 of playing time through their current win streak, behind only the Stars (172:47), Maple Leafs (165:51) and Devils (153:50) through that span.

LEE LIFTS ISLANDERS TO ANOTHER THIRD-PERIOD COMEBACK WIN
With his team trailing 3-1 to start the third period in the latest ā€œBattle of New Yorkā€, captain Anders Lee capped his teamā€™s rally by scoring the game winner with 5:30 remaining in regulation and helped the Islanders overcome a third-period deficit to win for the third time in 2022-23 ā€“ trailing only the Golden Knights (4) for the most among all teams.

* Tuesday witnessed the Islanders extend their road win streak against the Rangers to five games, the franchiseā€™s longest such run in the history of the rivalry. Lee has scored a team-best two goals (tied) through that span, while Mathew Barzal ā€“ who assisted on the game-tying goal ā€“ leads the team with six points (2-4ā€”6 in 5 GP).

CANADIAN CAPTAINS CONTINUE HIGH-SCORING PACE
A pair of Western Conference captains ā€“ who recently appeared alongside one another in an ad for an auto app ā€“ each padded their goal total to keep pacing in the early goings of the 2022-23 season.

Connor McDavid (1-1ā€”2) scored his League-leading 14th goal and now owns more multi-point games (8 GP) than outings with one point or fewer in 2022-23 (6 GP). Tuesday marked McDavidā€™s 150th contest dating to the start of the 2021-22 season and has registered an NHL-best 257 points through that time (91-166ā€”257). The last player to accumulate as many points through a 150-game span was Mario Lemieux, who tallied 98-159ā€”257 from Nov. 30, 1996 to Dec. 14, 2002 ā€“ a stretch during which Lemieux retired but returned in December 2000 after missing three entire seasons.

Bo Horvat (2-0ā€”2) scored multiple goals for the fourth time in five games to boost his totals over that stretch to 8-2ā€”10, helping the Canucks improve to 4-1-1 in their past six outings. Horvat, who was tied for 20th in the NHL with four goals entering play Oct. 28, now trails only McDavid on the goals list. He is one of three Canucks in the past 26 seasons to score at least eight goals over a five-game span.

The 63rd all-time regular-season meeting between Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin will be the first game of a TNT doubleheader when the Penguins (4-6-2, 10 points) visit the Capitals (6-6-2, 14 points) before the Ducks (4-8-1, 9 points) welcome the Wild (5-6-1, 11 points) to Honda Center.

* Crosby (523-900ā€”1,423 in 1,120 GP) and Ovechkin (788-635ā€”1,423 in 1,288 GP) started their NHL career on the exact same day ā€“ Oct. 5, 2005, exactly 6,244 days ago ā€“ and enter Wednesday with identical point totals as well as each captain having continued his climb up various NHL all-time lists already this season.

* Crosby became the 20th player in NHL history to record 900 assists Saturday, doing so the sixth-fastest. The Penguinsā€™ captain is on pace for 95 points in 2022-23 and sits just 77 shy of reaching the 1,500-point mark. Crosby owns a 36-23-3 record in games against Ovechkin and has bested his rival in assists (56) and points (84) in those contests.

* Ovechkin enters Wednesday just 12 goals shy of 800 and 14 from passing Gordie Howe (801) for second place on the NHLā€™s all-time goals list. The Capitals captain climbed a list of his own Saturday, surpassing Howe for the most goals with one franchise when he scored his 787th and moving within one of tying Jaromir Jagr (135) for the most game-opening tallies.

STAAL, STAAL AND STAAL SET TO FACE OFF WEDNESDAY

It will be a family affair in Florida as Eric and Marc Staal are set to face off against their brother, Jordan, when the Panthers (7-5-1, 15 points) welcome the Hurricanes (8-3-1, 17 points) to FLA Live Arena. It will mark the 13th game to feature three Staal brothers, a combination that has included brother Jared through the years, who is now the assistant coach of the AHLā€™s Charlotte Checkers.

* Beyond the ice, the four brothers have joined forces to create The Staal Family Foundation, which was established in 2012 with the goal of helping to improve the quality of life for children with cancer and their families. Community has been at the heart of their foundation with work that has made a direct impact through sports, health as well as child and youth projects, including childrenā€™s hospitals, treatment centres, rehabilitation clinics, health care facilities and summer camps.

NBA Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers at Sacramento Kings

0

Donovan Mitchell continues his reunion tour of California when his new team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, makes a stop in the state capital to duel the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night.

Having played his first five seasons with the Utah Jazz, while making three All-Star teams, Mitchell is making his first Western Conference swing since being dealt in September to the Cavaliers for three players and three future first-round draft picks.

The 26-year-old has lived up to the huge price so far, averaging 31.2 points per game — fourth-best in the NBA — while scoring 30 or more points seven times in his nine games.

His sixth and seventh of those 30-point outings came in a two-day stop in Los Angeles on Sunday and Monday, where he had 33 in a 114-100 win over the Lakers and 30 in a 119-117 loss to the Clippers.

After Wednesday’s performance in Sacramento, the Cavs will complete their California swing at Golden State on Friday.

Getting plenty of support from Darius Garland (19.0 points per game), Jarrett Allen (13.5 points, 12.2 rebounds) and Evan Mobley (15.2 points, 1.6 blocks), Mitchell has led the Cavaliers to an 8-2 record, the second-best mark in the NBA behind Milwaukee’s 9-1.

The Cavaliers had won eight in a row before Monday’s narrow defeat at the hands of the Clippers. There are still lessons being learned early in the season as coach J.B. Bickerstaff watched his team blow a 13-point, fourth-quarter lead.

The Kings walked off the Golden State court in San Francisco on Monday also believing they let one get away. Or at least it was one that should have gone into overtime.

Down 116-113 with 1.3 seconds left and inbounding in the frontcourt after a timeout, the Kings thought they saw Kevin Huerter get hacked by Klay Thompson on a 34-foot, 3-point attempt that was badly off the mark.

Afterward, new Kings coach Mike Brown blamed the no-call in part on the lack of respect the Sacramento franchise gets after having been an NBA nonentity for the better part of two decades.

Earlier, the Kings had put themselves in a position to win for the fourth time in five games, running out to as many as a 12-point lead.

Sacramento had defeated the Cavaliers five in a row before a 2-0 Cleveland sweep last season.

The Kings haven’t fared nearly as well against Mitchell, whose Jazz teams went 12-2 against Sacramento in games he played. Mitchell scored 22 or more points in 13 of those 14 head-to-heads, with a high of 42 in a home win in April 2021.
