CFB-FCS: Former Lions Jordan, Turner Selected in 2023 USFL College Draft

In the 2023 USFL College Draft, two outstanding football players from Southeastern Louisiana University were selected on Tuesday.

The Pittsburgh Maulers selected Ferlando Jordan, a former defensive back for SLU, in the fourth round, 25th overall. The Maulers selected CJ Turner, a former Lion wide receiver, with the 57th overall pick four rounds later.

Jordan, a native of Atlanta, is one of only 12 players in program history to have been named All-American twice. Jordan is the league’s career record holder with five interceptions returned for touchdowns and ranks fourth in school history with 11 career interceptions. He was named to the first team All-Southland Conference three times.

Among the school’s career leaders in receiving yards (2,761, third), receptions (207, second), receiving touchdowns (23, third), 100-yard receiving games (10, first), and total touchdowns scored (24, ninth), Turner is from LaPlace, Louisiana.

The Pittsburgh Mauler roster will include Jordan, Turner, and Xavier Lewis, a former SLU defensive back. Along with UIW’s Lindsey Scott Jr. (first round) and Taylor Grimes (seventh round), Pittsburgh selected two of four Southland Conference players.

With Jordan’s and Turner’s selection, Southeastern now has four USFL players on their rosters for the 2023 season, which begins on April 15. The Memphis Showboats signed 2020 Walter Payton Award winner and 2021 SLC Player of the Year Cole Kelley last month.

The former teammates of Jordan, Turner, Lewis, and Kelley will participate in spring practice from February 28 to April 1. The 2023 regular season for the defending Southland Conference champion Lions begins on Sept. 2 against Mississippi State.
